Bariatric Surgery Q & A

What is bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery is a collective term for weight loss surgeries like gastric bypass that alter your digestive system. Bariatric surgery can be an option if you’re severely overweight or obese and need to lose a considerable amount of weight for your health.

To be suitable for bariatric surgery, you must have tried diet and exercise and been unable to lose a significant amount of weight. Or you might be eligible if you have one or more serious medical conditions related to your obesity.

What kinds of bariatric surgery are there?

At Bergen Bariatric and Surgical Solutions P.C., Dr. Botvinov offers three types of bariatric surgery:

Sleeve gastrectomy

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive form of bariatric surgery that involves the surgical removal of up to 80% of your stomach. This procedure leaves you with a banana-shaped pouch, permanently reducing the capacity of your stomach.

Adjustable gastric band

The adjustable gastric band is a reversible form of bariatric surgery. Dr. Botvinov places an inflatable surgical band around the upper part of your stomach. This blocks off most of your stomach, leaving a small pouch above the gastric band.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the traditional type of bariatric surgery and still considered the gold standard when considering weight loss surgery. To perform a gastric bypass, Dr. Botvinov converts your stomach into a small pouch and connects it directly to your small intestine. The food you eat therefore bypasses a large part of your stomach and first section of the small intestine.

Bariatric surgeries work by restricting the amount of food you can consume, affecting the absorption of food, and reducing your appetite.

What are the benefits of bariatric surgery?

After bariatric surgery, you eat considerably less food, thereby losing your excess weight. The surgical procedure allows you to take back control of your eating and improve your overall health and well-being.

Losing weight after bariatric surgery can help reverse the severity of serious medical conditions like:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Dyslipidemia (lipid metabolism abnormalities)

Bariatric surgery can also significantly improve problems like obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis of weight-bearing joints, infertility, stress urinary incontinence, and problems with menstruation.

Your overall quality of life could improve significantly after bariatric surgery. Dr. Botvinov has particular expertise in obesity and related diseases and uses state-of-the-art techniques to carry out bariatric surgery procedures.
