Understanding the Different Types of Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a collective term for several types of weight loss surgeries for people who need to lose a significant amount of weight quickly for their health. Recently, it has become a common option for health-related weight loss treatment. In 2018, over 25,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in the US.

Choosing the right type of bariatric surgery is an important part of the process. Here at Bergen Bariatric and Surgical Solutions P.C., we offer minimally invasive surgical options for weight loss. Our provider — Dr. Mikhail A. Botvinov — specializes in laparoscopic surgeries, which means less recovery time and better patient satisfaction.

Types of bariatric surgery

Dr. Botvinov performs three types of bariatric surgery at Bergen Bariatric and Surgical Solutions. The first is the roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which is still considered the “gold standard” for weight loss surgery, but also the most extensive surgery. It involves cutting your small intestine and connecting a smaller portion of the stomach to the small intestine. It is done by creating two anastomoses ( bowel connections) by rerouting natural food passway.

The next type of bariatric surgery is gastric sleeve or vertical sleeve gastronomy. This procedure involves removing about 80% of the stomach to get fuller quicker. You also don’t feel as hungry because the capacity for your stomach to take in food is much smaller. This is the most popular and the most done bariatric surgery today.

The final type of procedure we offer is the adjustable gastric band. This reversible procedure involves putting a surgical band around your stomach, creating a small pouch similar to the gastric sleeve. This procedure was very popular about 10 years ago but is on the decline nowadays.

Choosing your bariatric surgery method

These surgeries are safe and effective for many individuals with weight-related health concerns. However, it’s essential to choose the correct procedure for your needs.

For example, if you’re unsure how the procedure will work for you and if you might change your mind afterward, it’s best to go with the gastric band. This procedure also involves slightly less recovery time. However, the procedure doesn’t always provide the same level of weight loss as the other two surgeries, and you might need another surgery.

The gastric bypass creates dramatic results that happen quickly, allowing any weight-related illnesses to get better faster. But some need help getting the nutrition necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you choose this procedure, you’ll probably need to take supplements to keep your body healthy.

Sleeve gastronomy doesn’t provide the reversible option of the gastric band, but it does allow patients to see more dramatic weight loss early on. Those who can’t undergo a gastric bypass for safety reasons can also benefit from this procedure. It may even allow you to bypass once you’ve lost a certain amount of weight, should you choose to do so.
